Sumi Nagashi

Acer palmatum Group: Matsumurae - Red

A large leaved cultivar, one of the best of the red leaved matsumuraes. The seven lobed leaves are deeply divided, almost to the leaf base. The elongate-ovate lobes taper gradually to a thin, sharp point. The lobes are well separated, margins are toothed, the teeth having sharp, hooked tips. The short leaf stalks are red. Spring colour is a bright purple-red. In early summer, the leaves darken to become almost black-red or very deep maroon. From midsummer to fall, the colour gradually changes to a deep green-red or brown-red. The leaves hold the early colour better

when given afternoon shade. Fall colour is crimson.
